In the 12c, Norwich was at the epicentre of the English wool trade, and for the King of England, only London contributed more to his revenues. Everard, the entrepreneurial Bishop of Norwich, and a Royal Chaplain, was informal advisor to the King on all matters relating to wool. The third son of a Wiltshire farming family, he was ambitious and politically astute, and in his time as Bishop, succeeded in amassing a considerable fortune. The King gave him the acronym ‘Purple Mustard’, a reference to his purple attire, and regular visits to Burgundy, where he purchased mustard for the Royal Court. Nearing the end of his days, Everard resigned his See, and retired to the Abbey of Fontenay in Burgundy, where he became a monk. He donated his worldly wealth to the Cistercian Order, founded by his lifelong friend, and spiritual mentor, Stephen Harding. We chose Everard as the Spirit of Burgundy, for his generous disposition and positive energy.
