Domaine Pavelot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2015

Hold on to your hats ! This is a mammouth vintage for Pavelot’s Grand Cru Chardonnay from the big hill (2/3 Pernand side and 1/3 Aloxe side). The wines from Corton-Charlemagne tend toward richness and length and that is easy to see when tasting them against the other Chardonnays from the surrounding vineyards, but the 2015 vintage goes further. The first nose carries scents of menthol and eucalyptus and the exotic. Then once on the palate, waves of candied lemon and almond paste crash in. Unusually expressive in its youth, perhaps a common theme for the 2015 vintage, this wine possesses the unctuous richness of a Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley (although without the bracing acidity) and the impressive length or a Marsanne from the other grand hill of Hermitage in the Northern Rhône. This is an intense and an intensely rich wine. While this vintage might not have the long-term aging potential of a Charlemagne from a “classic” (cooler) vintage, if for no other reason than it is just too darn irresistible now, it would be nevertheless fascinating to see how this charmer develops over the course of 10 years, if properly cellared.
