Widely considered the finest of Pernand’s 1er Crus, île des Vergelesses is indeed an island, sandwiched mid-slope between two 1er Cru parcels bearing the same name, Les Vergelesses of Pernand located just below and of Savigny les Beaune, just above.

The wine produced from this parcel is consistently of a higher caliber, more refined and more complex than from any of the surrounding vineyards and that is the reason this vineyard has consistently been noted as candidate for Grand Cru status. It’s envious east, south-east facing exposure enjoys unfettered sunlight throughout the day. The reddish, iron oxide hue of the soil endows the wine made here with a distinctly mineral edge not unlike those that come from a short distance away on the hill of Corton. These earthy elements contrast dark, plumy fruit and a stony, cherry pit core. Intriguingly mysterious and utterly delicious. When compared to the Côté de Beaune’s other most notable red wines, from Pommard and Volnay, île des Vergelesses stands out as a veritable bargain.
