Marchand Tawse Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru 2014

At the northern end of the Gevrey’s strip of Grand Cru vineyards, Mazi-Chambertin is more under the influence of the Combe de Lavaux than its exalted neighbors to the south, evidenced by its abundant tiny stones carried down through the opening in the hillside, lending a distinctly mineral component to the wines from this sector and by the cool stream of fresh air that comes down from the high plateau of the Haute Côte, resulting in wines with superb balance and freshness. This 2012, is a rich, opulent wine with dark cherry distillate, damson plum, lifted by lavender and violet notes on the high end treble clef. It possesses a mineral edge as well which offers a counterpoint to the concentrated fruit and which results in a wine of exceptional length and staying power. A thoroughbred which will easily require 15 years of aging and which should handsomely reward those who can exhibit some patience.
